Dr. Aldo R. Castaneda July 17, 1930 - April 30, 2021
The Congenital Heart Surgeons' Society mourns the passing of one its founding members, Dr. Aldo R. Castaneda. Dr. Castaneda died on April 30 at the age of 90 in Guatemala. Dr. Castaneda was an absolute giant in the field of congenital heart surgery. He is the father of the modern congenital heart surgery unit and pioneered neonatal and early corrective surgery. He was a legendary leader, teacher and researcher. His work has impacted the lives of countless patients and families across the globe. Dr. Castaneda's contributions spanned the history of heart surgery, he was a beloved mentor and many of his trainees lead programs in the United States and around the globe. Even those who were not fortunate enough to be his students learned from him and his disciples.
