CHSS Annual Meeting

Help us understand CHD!

Presidents Mesage: Carl L. Backer, MD

CHSS Holiday

As we approach the end of 2016, I want to let you know how honored I am to be stepping into the role of President of the Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society (CHSS). We recently held a very successful meeting at our new “home” at Chicago O’Hare, the lovely Loews Hotel in Rosemont, Illinois. The meeting had a total of 182 Attendees, including 75 members and 57 non-members, 20 residents and 30 Research Coordinators. The 2016 Program, chaired by James Jaggers, featured 7 videos, 10 posters during our traditional “Pizza Night,” and 22 Full-Length Abstracts.

The meeting capped off an incredible 2-year Presidency for Marshall Jacobs, who not only raised the bar on our educational initiatives, but who has worked tirelessly for so many years in raising funds for our support of the CHSS Data Center. Sincere congratulations to Marshall; I am very grateful to have his continued presence on our CHSS Executive Council for the next 2 years. Also, I am delighted to let you know that we will be signing a multiple-year agreement with the Loews Hotel, ensuring us generous meeting space and room availability as our annual meeting continues to grow.

One of my first priorities for the CHSS is to help our society fully fund the corpus of our John W. Kirklin-David Ashburn Fellowship Fund. And the goal is near, and very achievable. At present, the Kirklin-Ashburn Fund has a balance of approximately $420,000. Our plan is to achieve a 2017 corpus of $500,000, something very achievable if our CHSS members step up and meet this challenge. In fact, I believe we can do within the next few months. As you know, the Kirklin-Ashburn Fund plays a very important role in the CHSS being able to support a full time CHSS Data Center Research Fellow, housed at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

I also thought that it would be appropriate at this time to acknowledge all those who have supported the Kirklin-Ashburn fund so far. Sincere thanks to each of you for your support of this most important initiative.

While we are thanking our Kirklin-Ashburn supporters, we also need to name our Data Center supporters, whose generosity enables us to carry on the most important work of the Data Center and congenital research:

Berlin Heart
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
Children’s Healthcare
Children’s Heart Foundation
Children’s Hospital of Minnesota
Children’s Mercy Hospital
Ludwig Memorial Foundation
Orlando Health Foundation

And now, I issue this challenge to our members – urging you to step up and help us reach a half million dollar corpus for the Kirklin-Ashburn Fellowship Fund. You can donate online through our CHSS website at The CHSS has always been a leader in the congenital heart world – let’s show that continued leadership in giving our society, and our Data Center, an ongoing commitment to congenital heart research.

Wishing everyone the Happiest of Holidays and a Peaceful and Healthy New Year.
